Ozone Basics

Ozone is a molecule comprised of three oxygen atoms. Two of these form the same oxygen that all living things must breathe. The third oxygen atom, however, can detach from the oxygen molecule and attach itself to the molecules of other substances. In doing so, their chemical composition is altered.

Ozone that is present in high concentrations reacts with organic material within the environment. It can also do the same for the body's organic material as well. This action can be potentially harmful in a number of serious ways.

Inhaled ozone -- even in fairly small amounts -- can result in lung damage and shortness of breath. Chest pain, throat irritation and coughing can also result. For those people who already have chronic respiratory diseases like asthma, the effects can be even more serious. Being exposed to ozone can affect the ability of their body to fight respiratory infections.

Like exposure to any other substance, people vary widely in their susceptibility to the effects of ozone. That being said, even people who are otherwise healthy can experience breathing issues if they are exposed to ozone. Not surprisingly exercise and strenuous activity results in more ozone and other harmful vapors being inhaled. This increases the exposure to these substances and can result in damaging respiratory effects.

Remediation

Removing ozone and vapor extraction has proven to be an effective method of remediation in environments when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are present.
