Yes, these are what they call gravity dampers or shutters.

What's the difference between SD and ax series?
The SD series exhaust fans are housed in powder coated steel, whereas the AX series fans are housed in extruded aluminum.

Can you build this with a 3 phase explosion proof motor? That would allow vfd drive to control speed.
These fans are not able to be fitted with a 3 phase explosion proof motor. Also, explosion proof motors are not designed to be variable speed, or to run with a VFD. They are single speed only: On or Off

Can I use one of your speed controls on this fan?
No. Explosion proof motors are designed for single speed or On / Off use only.

How well do shutters seal up?
These are gravity dampers and not motorized, so when the fan is off the louvers drop to closed position. They will chatter if there are high winds. It is suggested to purchase the optional Weather Hood as a preventative measure for high winds and driving rains.

Yes. A 27” x 27” rough-in opening will give a 1/4” gap to work with.
